Getting a Spartan Costume for Halloween

Written by fashion on November 4, 2008 – 7:35 pm

Are you searching for that perfect costume for a upcoming party?

If so a great choice would to be to wear a costume complete with a Spartan Helmet.  A city in ancient Greece, Sparta played a significant military role in the region during the 4th to 7th centuries BC. The word Spartan – which means sparse – also comes from this culture, which was consumed with the need for military might.

Since the Spartan helmets that were worn in battle obscured much of the face, including the nose, cheeks and forehead, it is perfect for a costume that will leave other guests guessing as to your identity.

The lives of male Spartans were centered around war; they began their training in military schools at the age of seven, and afterward served the Spartan army until age thirty. Once they were assigned to a local brigade at age 20 — generally comprised of 15 to 20 soldiers — they all wore the distinctive uniform which included another Spartan Helmet based on the classic design of Greek Helmets.

These Spartan Helmets were generally less protective and designed for everyday wear. Although the helmet protected the top of the head and the nape of the neck and was secured to the head by a leather chin strap, it did not provide any protection for the face and left the face vulnerable to injury. Crests and horsehair plumbs fixed on top of a helmet should help a person see that it is some type of Spartan helmet.

To complete your costume, and dress historically, it is recommended that you pair your Spartan Helmet of choice, if you want to be recognized, with a red toga and leather sandals. For a combat-ready look, wear a metal chest plate and leather skirt, with your Spartan Helmet and sandals
